Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital was established in 1984 by a group of physicians who saw the need to provide access to comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation services Southern New Hampshire and the Merrimack Valley. The leader of that effort, Howard Gardner, MD, was an Army Neurosurgeon who had seen, first hand, the benefits rehabilitation was offering wounded soldiers. Returning to the Merrimack Valley and establishing a neuroscience practice, New England Neurological Associates, Dr. Gardner and his associates set out to build the first free standing Acute Rehabilitation Hospital in New Hampshire. Since opening our flagship location in Salem, NH in 1984, Northeast Rehab has expanded to include a second rehabilitation hospital in Nashua, over 20 outpatient centers, a home care division, a sports medicine division, an outpatient pediatric division including school systems and many other clinics and many other services aimed at helping those in need of rehabilitation. Northeast Rehab is excited to be in the process of establishing its third acute rehabilitation hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital is accredited by Joint Commission and CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), and is certified by Medicare. Northeast Rehab is also proud to have earned Joint Commissions Disease Specific Care Certification in Stroke Rehabilitation.

Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital was instrumental in the founding and development of Northeast Passage, a program providing access to adaptive recreational opportunities for disabled individuals. Northeast Rehab initially funded the idea and encouraged program development until it was able to become a viable entity on its own. Northeast Rehab was also instrumental in bringing the "Think First" program to New Hampshire . This program is presented in school systems to educate students on ways to prevent Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries.

To meet the needs of our patients, Northeast Rehab employs a team of over 700 talented individuals serving in clinical and non-clinical positions. Northeast Rehab offers people the ability to receive personalized rehabilitation care with the support of an entire network of rehabilitation services.
